Venture Clienting with ebm-papst - Digitizing Operational Performance in High-Precision Manufacturing
ebm-papst is seeking solution providers that can digitize shopfloor data capture and create a clear, timely KPI view for its HighSpeed PilotPlant. The goal is to replace manual, fragmented data flows with a reliable operational dashboard that supports both operators and team leads. Selected teams gain the opportunity to run a PoC and enter a long-term partnership.
Who can participate?
Innovators working in manufacturing data capture, shopfloor digitalization, KPI monitoring or lightweight MES approaches — including startups, scaleups and technology companies with relevant industrial experience.

Status Quo
You will find all information regarding the business problem and context of the project.
Context
The HighSpeed PilotPlant is a pre-series manufacturing environment where ebm-papst develops a new high-precision, high-speed compressor. The PilotPlant acts as a bridge between engineering and industrialization, meaning workflows, measurement steps, and takt times are highly specialized and evolve continuously. Approx. 10 machines and 13 operators work across machining, assembly, and temperature-controlled measuring. Processes involve µ-level tolerances, frequent re-measuring, and variable workflow sequences.
Problem Definition
The production environment is technically demanding and data-intensive, but the current information flow is fragmented and largely manual. Currently, key figures are entered manually and evaluated only once per month, which limits timely learning from sample production. Operators manually submit time and process data using forms; these inputs are exported into Excel, where KPIs and basic calculations are handled.
Key characteristics of the current setup:
- Multiple disconnected data sources (Planner, forms, Excel)
- High manual workload, prone to input errors and inconsistencies
- Data is typically reviewed monthly, not continuously
- No direct connection to machine data
- Limited transparency for both operators and shopfloor meetings
The current setup does not serve both shopfloor operators and team leaders, limiting daily transparency and decision-making.
Knowledge Base
For providers evaluating fit, the following context is relevant:
- Background Information about the HighSpeed PilotPlant
- The environment includes confidential high-precision machining and measurement processes; detailed information is only available after NDA (see process tab)
- Current IT landscape is based on Microsoft 365.
- The Technikum is not connected to SAP systems at this stage; future SAP ME alignment may become relevant.
- Internal KPI definitions and example datasets exist and can be shared once confidentiality is ensured.
- Providers should expect a dynamic, non-standardized manufacturing context, where processes and data needs may evolve.
